Placerville event: El Dorado County’s Veterans Day Ceremony
Veterans Day - 95-year-old WWII/Korean War Vet Named Veteran of the Year
Wally Richardson, a 95-year-old veteran of World War II and the Korean War who has spent the past 20 years greeting and encouraging students at El Dorado Hills' Marina Village Middle School to lead lives of humility, character and service has been named El Dorado County’s Veteran of the Year for 2018. Richardson will receive the Veteran of the Year honor at Veterans Day ceremonies held on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. at the El Dorado County Veterans Monument (360 Fair Lane, Placerville).
Three additional World War II veterans, Dan Fawcett (Pollock Pines), Sal Giovanni (Garden Valley) and Robert Pomeroy (Placerville) will also be recognized for their lives of service to the cause of freedom. Special ceremonies will also honor the crew of a WWII bomber that crashed near Placerville and remember 12 El Dorado County servicemen lost in wars and conflicts since Vietnam.
Admission to El Dorado County’s Veterans Day ceremony is free, open to the public and includes a military color guard, patriotic music, parade of flags, reading of proclamations, a wreath laying, three-volley rifle salute, recognition of El Dorado County service men who were killed in action and in the line of duty and presentation of the Veteran of the Year award. The program is organized by volunteers of the El Dorado County Veterans Alliance. More about the program and their work is found at eldoradocountyveterans.org.
