Description:

El Dorado Arts Council has announced the opening of a new exhibition that celebrates the 1960 Winter Olympics. This curated exhibition of art, memorabilia, and promotional items from the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley opens Friday, January 12, and runs through March 9, 2018, at the organization's Fausel House Gallery.

In the winter of 1960, the world flocked to a small vale high in the mountains to the northwest of Lake Tahoe after a flurry of activity, and a series of setbacks, had transformed this unassuming mountain valley from a modest ski destination to a town with all the latest amenities. The 1960 Winter Olympics were here, and Squaw Valley would never be the same.

Fifty-eight years later, a new Winter Olympics is set to begin on the opposite side of the world, but many still fondly recall the happenings in Squaw Valley, California. The Games of Winter brings you back to that thrilling time, evoking memories of the sting of cold air in your lungs, the crunch of snow underfoot, and the thundering cheer of the crowd as the best athletes in the world compete on the Olympic stage.

Generously loaned from the Museum of Sierra Ski History and 1960 Winter Olympics, and collector Stan Batiste, the items on display in this exhibition are truly unique to their time. Sierra ski history author David C. Antonucci said "This event brings together the creativity and innovation of the 1960 Winter Olympics and reveals El Dorado County's forgotten Olympic history. Artistry by Walt Disney and documentary photographs by Official Olympic Photographer Bill Briner tell the story of an iconic Winter Olympics whose legacy still resonates to this day."

Photographs capture the electrifying excitement of the spectators and champions alike, maps of the competition trails artistically show where the triumphs and losses occurred, and souvenirs exemplify the magic of the day.

Stan and Maryann Batiste of the Sierra Ski Museum are very excited about the upcoming show at the Gallery. "This is the first time we have loaned pictures and artifacts out of the Museum - it should be fun!" they noted. "Our goal has always been to share the history of the 1960 Winter Olympics and Sierra Ski History in order to educate the community about our rich history."
