Brewmasters Pie

Things are getting pretty lively on Main Street with the recent opening of Placerville Public House. The bright open space and relaxed, friendly atmosphere is perfectly set up for communal eating, drinking and general merriment, which many nights comes in the form of live music and games.

Although there’s a huge array of bottled beers and local wines on offer, it’s the 14 draft beers that really steal the spotlight. Local taps are rotated in on the regular; the Saturday my husband and I visited, selections included regional favorites from Sacramento’s Bike Dog, Auburn’s Knee Deep, and Mraz in El Dorado Hills.

The menu hits a perfect balance between “drunk food” and “classy cuisine”; in other words, say goodbye to tired old chicken strips. For our lunchtime visit, we ordered the Brewmasters Pie and Portabella Sandwich. Inspired by a classic shepherd’s pie, this version boasted a hearty house-made stout stew topped with garlicky mashed potatoes, cheddar cheese and crispy onions—the stout lending a deep rich flavor to a warming winter dish. The portabella sandwich came on a fresh-baked Kaiser roll with the meaty mushroom grilled to perfection—and so juicy I wished that arm napkins were a thing (a good sign of a well-cooked mushroom)—all heightened with roasted red peppers and melty mozzarella.

To wet our whistles—and in the spirit of Saturday—my husband enjoyed a subtle Firestone 805 Blonde Ale, while I went big with the Mraz Cherry American Sour…a gorgeous goblet of deep, ruby-red magic.

We also partook in the cannoli and cream for dessert, and did not regret one bite of it. The small yet deliciously crispy dark chocolate cannoli with vanilla ice cream was the perfect end to a fun and satisfying lunch.

With friendly service, inventive eats and excellent brews, Placerville Public House is sure to become the place where everybody knows your name—come on down and introduce yourself!
