Ask the Expert : Placerville Optometrist Has An Answer to Glaucoma Question

05/26/2015 09:05AM ● Published by Style

Q: My mother was recently diagnosed with glaucoma and says it’s hereditary. If possible, what can I do to prevent it?

A: The most common type of glaucoma, known as primary open angle glaucoma (POAG), is in fact hereditary. If members of your immediate family have glaucoma you’re at a much higher risk than the rest of the population, as family history increases the risk four to nine times. At this time, there is no known prevention for glaucoma; however, annual comprehensive eye examinations with an optometrist or ophthalmologist will determine early on if you’re developing the disease. Early diagnosis is the best “prevention.”
