After several complaints from residents of El Dorado County, the California Highway Patrol is stepping up its enforcement of drivers violating school bus laws.
According to a report from ABC News 10, CHP was alerted to the problem when school bus drivers began contacting police. CHP posted about the issue on its Facebook page, and were flooded with comments from flooded parents.
As a result, CHP officer Ian Hoey has begun randomly shadowing buses on the winding back roads across the county looking for drivers speeding near school buses or driving around a bus with its stop sign out.
"We want to keep it safe. We want to prevent the tragedy before it happens," Hoey told ABC 10.
On average, Hoey said he stops a driver three out of five patrols he conducts.
He said is ultimate goal is to get that number to zero.
