Help Placerville Library "Fill Their Shelves"

In the face of this dilemma, the Friends of the Library–Placerville Chapter has launched a “Fill Our Shelves” campaign to raise some of this much-needed funding from the community. An initial targeted mailing went out Nov. 3 and brochures and information are available now at the library, which is located at 345 Fair Lane, Placerville.
Unlike the other libraries in the county system, Placerville Main Library receives no specific direct tax support and must rely on the County General Fund to provide the services patrons need. “In the past few years, our library has had to make difficult cuts, including reducing the hours it is open and eliminating the adult literacy program,” explained Joan Wallace, president of the Placerville chapter. “It has decreased staffing and worked hard to find efficiencies wherever possible, so we felt it was time to ask the public for more help.”
Here’s how Fill Our Shelves works: A donation of $250 goes toward “sponsoring” a shelf in the New Book Nook or Children’s Library area for at least a year, with placement of a metal plate with the donor’s name on the shelf. A donation of $100 will purchase four new books with the donor’s name (or that of an honoree) inside each one. Other monetary donations to the program are also welcome and will be acknowledged. Donations are tax-deductible.
“One hundred percent of funds raised will go to buying new books and other materials, such as audiobooks, CDs, DVDs, and ebooks,” Wallace noted. Because items can be requested by any patron who has an El Dorado County library card, all county branches ultimately benefit from the purchase of new materials.
The Friends of the Library is a not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) organization that provides support to the library through fundraising, memberships, gifts and endowments. For more information or to join Friends of the Library, visit the El Dorado County Library website at eldoradolibrary.org/friends.htm.
