Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?
We are a friendly, community-oriented pet supply store. Now living in the Foothills, we established our original family-owned pet supply business more than 26 years ago. We recently found our one-of-a-kind “dream store,” which is on Green Valley Road, across from the Purple Place. We stock a variety of high-quality premium pet foods, treats, toys, crates, pens, collars, leashes, and now wild bird and patio décor specialties. We have never, nor will we ever, sell animals. We are proud supporters of local pet rescue organizations. After two start-up stints inside the corporate world, Dina and I knew that following our own hearts made the best business sense for us. Selecting the pet supply business was just a natural extension of who we were (and are): total pet lovers! After beginning small (via specialty dog and cat shows), we decided to take the scary brick and mortar plunge in 1987. Looking back, our timing wasn’t stellar as Dina was expecting our first child and money was more than just a little stretched. Though we had many slow and difficult days from the start, we felt fortunate for the wonderful number of affirming customers who stood by us. These customers and their pets are the driving force behind our business success; they are also an integral inspiration for our Folsom/El Dorado Hills location.
How are you involved with both the community and your customer?
Togs for Dogs and Cats Too is perhaps the proudest of its extensive history of community outreach. In addition to supporting numerous organizations – including rescues, SPCA, public/private school, daycares, the arts and many more – we’re especially blessed that we could step up to raise funds for a local infant born without functioning kidneys. I will never forget what we, the boy’s family, our customers, and the community at-large felt when almost one year later the boy was taken off dialysis and received a life-saving kidney donation.
