Thai food is one of my favorite cuisines so I jumped at the chance to dine at Thai Basil, a cozy eatery tucked away in Burke Junction.

Accented with fountains and statues reminiscent of Thailand, the restaurant offers authentic wok dishes as well as grilled meats and seafood, curry specialties, and noodle and rice selections. Each menu item is featured with its true Thai name and a number “code,” making it easy to order. All spicy dishes are labeled for those who want to indulge in – or avoid – these choices.

First to the table was the Po-Pia-Tod, an appetizer served in a charming ceramic boat. The spring rolls stuffed with chicken, pork, veggies and crystal noodles were crispy on the outside and served with a sweet and sour sauce that had a nice kick of red pepper flakes.

From the “Wok Corner” menu section, we selected the Pad-Ma-Mauang-Him-Ma-Pan with chicken. Served with steamed jasmine rice, it was flavored with onions, peppers, mushrooms and carrots sautéed in a light gravy soy sauce and topped with roasted cashew nuts. This was a very balanced dish; not one flavor overwhelmed another and the cashews added the perfect texture.

Panang with Scallops simmered in creamy coconut milk and red curry sauce represented our “Curry Corner” selection. My only reaction was, “Wow!” The tender scallops melted in my mouth and the rich sauce swirled with milk and spices was heavenly.

For dessert we asked for – and received – an off-menu item. The chocolate fried banana was prepared egg roll-style with a crispy wrapper on the outside and chocolate syrup on the inside. It was served with a generous scoop of mango ice cream. Truth be told, the exceptional mango ice cream was the best part of the dish.

With friendly and attentive service, plus top-notch food, we’ll definitely return to Thai Basil!
