Tucked away next to a wine store on Douglas Boulevard lies Vaiano Trattoria…blink and you may miss it!
As my friend and I entered, we were unsure of what to expect, especially after perusing the menu online and having difficulties pronouncing the authentic Italian dish names. We seated ourselves and admired the paintings; soon after, we were brought a basket of warm bread and dipping oil.
For an appetizer, we ordered Noci e Pancetta Crostini. (The waitress teased our pronunciation good-naturedly.) The roasted walnuts, pancetta (Italian bacon) and mascarpone cheese spread on a crostini made for the perfect mixture of flavors and consistencies. We finished off all five with no problem and were eager to taste the entrées. I ordered the Lasagna Tradizionale Toscana while my friend opted for the Mostaccioli alla Matriciana. With layers of noodles piled high and bathed in cheese, a meat sauce and creamy Béchamel, the lasagna could not have been more delicious. Each mouthful was heavenly as the cheese never ended. My pal’s Mostaccioli (“little mustache” in Italian and similar to penne) pasta had a slight kick to it; however, the spiciness worked in the meal’s favor.
The servings were fairly large, but the leftovers tasted just as good the following day.
What I considered to be the best part of the entire experience was the dessert. We shared the Cioccolato Lampone and although we were stuffed beyond belief by the time it arrived, we devoured every bite. The chocolate truffle mousse was rich but not overly so, while the raspberry marmalade was an unexpected delight and added to the dessert’s elegant appearance.
Small and cozy with attentive servers and fabulous food, Vaiano Trattoria left my friend and I with extremely satisfied stomachs, along with thoughts of returning again soon!
