Is it true my iPod ear buds can affect my hearing?
Experts agree, long or repeated exposure to volumes of 85-plus decibels can result in Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL). Since iPods and MP3 players produce volumes up to 115 decibels, exposure at this volume can quickly cause permanent damage. While it is difficult for some to judge appropriate volumes, many people commonly err by increasing volume in loud environments. To help, set the volume in a quiet environment so you can still hear others talking and keep it at that level. Also, limit listening to an hour a day. Have your hearing checked yearly to monitor for signs, and educate your children about NIHL.
I like to work out in my own home. What equipment should I purchase that doesn’t take up too much space, but still provides the results of hitting a gym?
These days, it seems like everyone has come up with the newest and greatest gimmick to get you in shape without leaving your living room. If used properly and consistently, they all work. But most aren’t cheap and take up too much room. The best piece of equipment is the one you take with you everywhere you go – your body. Body weight exercises have always proven to be effective and can be intensified with basic, inexpensive, easy-to-store tools such as an exercise ball, a mat, chair, bands, and hand weights. For an example of a quick at-home body weight workout, follow this routine. Warm-up by taking a brisk walk around the block or jog in place for eight to 10 minutes. Then, do three sets of 20 reps of the following exercises: push-ups, sit-ups/crunches on the ball, triceps body weight dips on a chair, air squats/or squats with a band, and walking lunges. No matter what you decide, remember consistency is key and no excuses! The possibilities are endless.
